Model Number Guide
How to Find Your Stove Model Number
Every Stove Shield is precision-cut for your exact stove model. This guide shows you where the model number is printed on your range – in five universal spots and brand by brand.
Step 1
What Does a Stove Model Number Look Like?
Your model number lives on a small metal plate or sticker called the rating plate (or serial tag). It is a mix of letters and digits – for example JGB735SPSS (GE), WFGS5030RS0 (Whirlpool) or FGGC3045QS (Frigidaire).
The plate usually shows two numbers. The model number identifies your stove’s design – that is the one we cut your Stove Shield from. The serial number is unique to your individual unit and is only needed for warranty or service.
Copy the model number exactly as printed, including any letters at the end – suffixes can change the burner layout.

Step 2
5 Places to Check on Any Range
Typical rating plate locations on a freestanding gas or electric range.
- 1
Oven door frame
Open the oven door fully and look around the front frame of the oven opening – the left and bottom edges are the most common spots. This is the first place to check on most modern ranges.
- 2
Storage or warming drawer frame
Slide the bottom drawer open and check the frame around the drawer opening, especially the left-hand side. On some models the tag sits on the drawer panel itself.
- 3
Behind or under the control panel
On rear-control ranges, reach behind the control panel and feel for a small metal flag you can rotate up. On front-control ranges, the tag may be tucked inside the frame under the panel.
- 4
Under the lift-up cooktop
On many gas and electric coil ranges, the cooktop lifts up like a car hood. The plate is on the inner frame – often the left side wall or a back corner.
- 5
Side panel, leg or kick panel
Check the lower sides of the body near the floor, the legs behind the drawer, or the rear panel. This is more common on older ranges, slide-ins and RV stoves.
Before you start: make sure the stove is off and cool. Keep fingers clear when lifting or lowering a cooktop, and if the range sits tight against the wall, use a flashlight or your phone camera instead of pulling the appliance out.
Built-In Cooktops
Have a Built-In Cooktop Instead of a Range?
A built-in (drop-in) cooktop has no oven or drawer below it, so the rating plate isn’t on a door frame – it’s on the underside of the cooktop, facing down into the cabinet.
Flip the cooktop over – the model/serial plate sits on the underside, often near the gas connection or a burner well.
Where to look on a built-in cooktop
The model number is printed on a metal plate or sticker on the bottom face of the cooktop. Because it points down into the cabinet, you’ll need to view the underside one of these ways:
- Open the cabinet or drawer directly beneath the cooktop and look up at the underside with a flashlight
- If the unit lifts or unclips from the countertop cutout, carefully raise it and check the bottom panel
- Look near the gas supply connection or around a burner well – the plate is commonly placed there
- Check your owner’s manual or original receipt, which lists the same model number
Safety: make sure the cooktop is off and fully cool. For gas models, do not disturb or disconnect the gas line – if the unit doesn’t lift easily, read the plate from underneath in the cabinet instead, or email us a photo.
Step 3
Find Your Model Number by Brand
Manufacturers place the rating plate in slightly different spots. Open your brand below for the exact locations, then enter the model number in our search to find your custom-fit protector.
GE Stove Model Number Location⌄
On GE ranges, the model and serial tag is most often found:
- Behind the oven door, on the front frame of the oven opening
- On front-control models: inside the frame, under the control panel (gas)
- On electric coil models: behind the rear control panel – reach behind the middle and rotate the metal flag up
- Under the left front surface unit, or under the cooktop on lift-up styles
- On the left leg behind the drawer or kick panel
Note: GE range model numbers will not end in a number preceded by a “P” – those codes on caution labels are part numbers, not your model number.

Model Number FAQs
What’s the difference between a model number and a serial number?⌄
The model number identifies your stove’s design and is shared by every unit of that design – it’s what we use to cut your Stove Shield. The serial number is unique to your individual appliance and is used for warranty and service.
My model number has extra letters or digits at the end. Which part do I enter?⌄
Enter the full model number exactly as printed, including any suffix. Suffixes often indicate color or a design revision, and the burner layout can differ between revisions.
What if my stove model isn’t in your catalog?⌄
We love adding to our Stove Shield collection. Send your model number and a photo of your stovetop to service@stoveshield.com and we’ll help you find or create the right fit.
Is it safe to look for the model number myself?⌄
Yes, with basic precautions: make sure the stove is off and cool, keep fingers clear when lifting a cooktop or lowering it back down, and use a flashlight or phone camera instead of moving the appliance if it sits tight against the wall.
The rating plate is worn off and unreadable. What now?⌄
Check your purchase receipt, owner’s manual, or the retailer’s order history. Otherwise, email us a clear photo of your full stovetop and burner layout at service@stoveshield.com and our team will match it.
